Miss Bliss
Let’s see…what to tell you about me? I’m in my late 40’s, I KNOW CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Seems pretty crazy to me too. Who knew I would live this long? Not me that’s for sure. Why not you ask? Well, I have what can kindly be called a “checkered past”, you know, the sort you don’t talk about much in polite society. Hell, if you’re smart you don’t talk about it much in any society. So I shan’t go into detail here let’s just agree that my shadowy past is best left to the soft focus of generalizations and Lemony Snicket type black and white photos.
I will tell you that I was raised by Southern parents on the West Coast which means that I was the rare kid in Los Angeles to love grits and fried steak. I was also the only kid to have a Mom who said things like “If you don’t stop that I’m gonna pinch your head off, throw it over the fence and tell God you died!” You didn’t mess with Mom. I studied music until I quit it for dance until I quit that for theatre. I haven’t yet quit theatre though I only make a tiny portion of my living from it. But in the world of theatre making ANY portion of your living from it is a HUGE success. I would like to be clear here I am not an actor. Nothing wrong with actors, some of my best friends and all that, I’m just not one, I’m a lighting designer. The truth is my love of theatre lives in the land of my deepest love of all…stories. Theatre is all about storytelling and I have a thing for storytelling.
My presence here at SBI is purely a result of my obsession with the written word. I am a passionate reader though not always a fast one, I am a passionate writer though ALWAYS a slow one (except when I get pissed off then look out I will fire off a rant at lightning speed), a lover of technology with very little in-depth understanding of it, a fierce defender of the arts and their deep importance in our world and an all-around nut job about stories and storytellers. I firmly believe that storytelling is part of the bedrock of human existence. I think reading/listening to stories is also part of the bedrock of human existence. It’s a participatory experience. Every story needs a reader to fully exist. Writers are often living in a bit of void where they write their stories and send them out into the world and then simply must hope that their story finds its readers. Part of our goal here at SBI is to create some community among writers and readers. To celebrate the entire process of storytelling and have a place where we can share our ideas, experiences and writing with each other. I hope you enjoy it.
